About The Position

The NSQIP Surgeon Champion role is an exciting opportunity to provide leadership and direction to physicians and other health care providers on surgical quality and patient safety initiatives, with the aim of improving quality and supporting the reduction of perioperative adverse outcomes. You will work with physicians and other clinical staff to promote NSQIP and will collaborate with senior leadership and staff to identify evidence-based strategies to ensure best practice at the site. OVERVIEW The Surgeon Champion is a physician who has a passion for fostering surgical quality improvement at their respective acute care site in collaboration with the NSQIP Regional Team and support systems. This position is accountable to the Local Department Head of Surgery with dotted line reporting to the Executive Medical Director (EMD), Clinical Quality and Patient Safety. You will dedicate approximately six hours per month to this leadership role. This will include partnering with the NSQIP Regional Team to discuss opportunities for quality improvement, reviewing NSQIP data and reports to identify quality improvement projects in areas identified as “needs improvement,” attending the monthly NSQIP Collaborative meetings, annual NSQIP Summits, and Annual American College of Surgeons (ACS) Conferences. Work schedule: The hours are flexible - evening meetings and travel may be required. Term of appointment: 1 year

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the local Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR) to discuss opportunities for improvement and issues related to data abstraction.
  • Review semi-annual reports with NSQIP Regional Team.
  • Develop and support, in partnership with NSQIP regional team, at least one quality improvement project per year.
  • Attend the FH collaborative meetings, NSQIP summits, and annual ACS Conference. Attendance at these meetings is highly encouraged and expected whenever possible.
  • Partner with the NSQIP Regional Team to advocate for NSQIP and provide updates/reports to their Local Department Head of Surgery, site HQOMC, RMD Surgery, Surgical Network and Clinical Quality & Patient Safety.
  • Complete the IHI Open School online modules (offered through the Physician Quality Improvement (PQI) or the Clinical Quality & Patient Safety 1-day QI Essentials Training within 1 year from contract start.
