About The Position

Iowa State University is seeking a detail-oriented (MLT) Medical Laboratory Technician to support diagnostic testing services in the College of Veterinary Medicine. This position plays a vital role in performing diagnostic tests across various species, ensuring quality control, and assisting in training future veterinary professionals in a clinical and research laboratory environment. If you're looking to get into animal diagnostics, this is your opportunity — no prior animal experience is required, and we will provide full training on the veterinary side.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Medical Lab Technology or equivalent.
  • Certified as a medical lab technician or equivalent.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.
  • Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a Diagnostic or clinical laboratory.
  • Experience in laboratory techniques, including sample preparation, staining, and microscopy.
  • Additional years working as a Medical Laboratory Technologist.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic testing, including hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, and cytology, on multi-species samples.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments and analyzers.
  • Manage blood banking and coagulation procedures.
  • Enter and review test data in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Train students, residents, and new staff on lab procedures and equipment.
  • Conduct quality control checks and routine instrument maintenance.
  • Maintain lab inventory, organize referral test submissions, and update lab records.
  • Performs a variety of tests and confirms test results.
  • Reports findings to physicians.
  • Plans, develops, and formulates procedures for lab tests.
  • Inventories supplies.
  • Collects samples of body fluids for testing.
  • Prepares specimens.
  • Operates and calibrates clinical laboratory equipment.
  • Advises clinicians and other health care providers on methods of collecting specimens.
