About The Position

Performs various chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, and microbiological testing in accordance with QC guidelines. Reviews all sample data, ensures specimen integrity, investigates discrepancies, documents resolutions, maintains inventory, executes QC and proficiency testing, and follows all safety and regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • Graduate MT, CLS, CLT, or MLT and/or Certified OR Associate Degree in CLT or MLT trained in Microbiology.
  • Ability to stand for long periods, perform manual tasks with dexterity, follow safety protocols, and perform essential job functions.
  • Reasonable accommodations will be provided in accordance with the ADA.

  • Experience in general laboratory and microbiology testing.

Responsibilities

  • Performs, documents, and reports qualitative and quantitative laboratory tests.
  • Evaluates samples for specimen integrity, instrument function, and validity of results.
  • Operates, troubleshoots, and performs preventive maintenance on analyzers.
  • Maintains adequate supplies and accurate QC/QA documentation.
  • Trains new employees and MLT students.
  • Assists healthcare personnel with laboratory-related issues and documents incidents.
  • Performs specimen collection as needed.
  • Uses hospital computer systems for order communication and verification.
  • Participates in continuing education, CAP workload recording, and other administrative duties.
  • Follows all safety guidelines and performs duties in a high-touch manner.
  • Sets up cultures and performs stains, including proper incubation.
  • Logs all microbiology specimens into Cerner.
  • Reads and interprets colony counts, isolation, ID, and susceptibility using Vitek and manual methods.
  • Performs AFB and Mycology setups, stains, interpretations, and reporting.
  • Performs parasitology testing including wet mounts, trichrome stains, and test kits.
  • Performs molecular testing for C. diff and maintains testing systems.
  • Reports critical organisms to Infection Control and Mississippi Department of Health.
  • Sends isolates to reference laboratories and Mississippi State Lab.
  • Uses and maintains BacT/Alert system.
  • Assists with DOT/NON-DOT drug screen collections.
