About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist performs laboratory procedures in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with hospital and departmental policies. This role supports all phases of the laboratory workflow including pre analytic, analytic, and post analytic processes. The position may also share responsibility for delegating work assignments in the absence of a supervisor or lead. All duties must comply with CLIA standards for moderate and high complexity testing as outlined in 42CFR493.1495 and 42CFR493.1425.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and successful completion of a Medical Technology program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation CAHEA, or a Bachelor of Science degree in a laboratory related science such as Biology or Chemistry with equivalent training, education, and experience such as military training.
  • One year of full-time clinical laboratory experience required. Clinical laboratory experience gained during an accredited Medical Technology program will satisfy this requirement.
  • Working knowledge of general laboratory equipment including centrifuges and microscopes.
  • Ability to use keyboard, laboratory information systems, calculators, fax machines, and automated analyzers.
  • Basic computer skills required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs only those moderate and high complexity tests authorized by the Laboratory Medical Director and appropriate to the individual’s education, training, experience, and technical abilities.
  • Follows established procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance.
  • Maintains documentation demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are handled and tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adheres to quality control policies and documents all quality control activities, calibrations, and instrument or procedural maintenance.
  • Follows established policies and procedures whenever test systems fall outside acceptable performance limits.
  • Identifies issues that may affect test performance or result reporting and either corrects the problem or immediately notifies the appropriate supervisor or the Laboratory Medical Director.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Consistently produces accurate work that reflects strong attention to detail and supports the organization’s commitment to quality.
  • Communicates effectively and appropriately, using sound judgment regarding what information to share, with whom, and in what manner. Speaks clearly and listens actively.
  • Works independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating good judgment and adherence to written and verbal instructions. Seeks guidance when needed and makes decisions in the absence of a supervisor or director.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and technical skills required to perform the job competently. Applies technical competencies in daily work and consistently follows all safety protocols.
  • Identifies unsafe practices and takes responsibility for addressing potential risks.
