The laboratories of IU Health offer some of the most comprehensive laboratory services in Indiana, performing more than 19 million tests a year, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These services are provided to hospitals and physicians across the country. The Medical Laboratory Scientist performs laboratory tests on patient specimens, provides information for diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of diseases, maintains performance records, and utilizes independent judgment to generate acceptable test results within quality control standards. They may participate in research and development activities, act as a key resource person for staff, and instruct students and staff on laboratory procedures and techniques. All tasks are performed according to standard operating procedures, and the role may involve the development and modification of procedures.
