About The Position

UPMC is seeking Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) and Medical Lab Technicians (MLT) to join our team. We offer a sign-on bonus of $15,000 for MLS and $10,000 for MLT candidates with a 2-year commitment. Our robust Laboratory Career Ladder ensures that candidates are placed in the appropriate level based on their education and background. Lab Techs will be responsible for the accurate performance of laboratory testing, which is crucial for patient diagnosis and treatment. This role requires applying clinical knowledge to achieve quality patient care outcomes.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent, and at least 2 years experience as a Specimen Processor in a clinical lab, OR Associate degree with biology and chemistry courses and at least 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor in a clinical lab.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT): Associate degree in a laboratory science with certification from an accredited institution, or Bachelor of Science degree with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS): Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program, or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88.
  • Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: Medical Technologist MT(ASCP), Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS(ASCP), or equivalent certification preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
  • Prefer 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct, direct or assist with test development and methodology/equipment evaluation, selection and implementation.
  • Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols.
  • Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take action as outlined in predetermined protocols.
  • Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration.
  • Train and orient new employees, students and residents, as applicable and as assigned.
  • Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance and personnel policies.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Assume responsibility for first-line supervision of the section/department on a temporary basis as delegated.
  • Perform High Complexity Testing without direct supervision.
