About The Position

UPMC St. Margaret is hiring a full-time Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Scientist to support the Automated Testing Lab (ATL)! We are looking for individuals who are interested in working evening hours with rotating weekends and holidays. The Automated Testing Lab is a modern, state-of-the-art facility where you will have the opportunity to make a direct impact on life-changing medicine. Our lab offers a diverse team that works closely together, and opportunities for growth and recognition! Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Medical Lab Technician salary starts at $21.48 an hour. UPMC St. Margaret is also offering a Sign-on Bonus of up to $15,000 for those who qualify!

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an accredited Medical Lab Scientist program,
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent categorical or MLT certification,
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred.
  • New York License required for NY locations.

Responsibilities

  • Courteously and professionally interact with all laboratory customers and respond to telephone inquiries promptly.
  • Follow laboratory and hospital policies regarding procedures, quality control, safety, and compliance.
  • Collect and process specimens (including phlebotomy) according to established procedures, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analyses with precision and accuracy, recognizing and following up on critical or abnormal results.
  • Identify and address issues with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results as per protocols.
  • Operate and maintain equipment, perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, calibration, and minor repairs.
  • Use reagents and supplies cost-effectively and maintain inventory.
  • Stay updated on techniques, principles, and instruments affecting test results.
  • Assist with test development, methodology, and equipment evaluation and implementation.
  • Perform high complexity testing independently.
  • Temporarily supervise the section/department as needed.
  • Train and orient new employees, students, and residents.
