About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist II has the educational background to perform standard laboratory procedures requiring a broad use of independent judgment and responsibility with minimum technical supervision. The technologist maintains equipment and records and performs QC and QA related to test performances. The technologist performs a broad range of laboratory procedures in hematology. The technologist understands the roles and relationships among health care practitioners. The Medical Laboratory Scientist II performs at a level of quality and productivity commensurate for a technologist with this level of experience and may be assigned special projects and/or administrative related duties. The MLSII, having the additional designation of Lead Technologist, is assigned specific administrative related duties and is likely assigned additional special tasks and/or projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in biology, chemistry, medical technology, or medical laboratory science
  • 2 years of experience working in a clinical laboratory
  • ASCP or equivalent certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT), or discipline specific certification (C, H).

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in automation systems.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in instrumentation currently in use in the Hematology
  • Knowledge of testing methods currently in use in the Hematology Section

Responsibilities

  • Set-up, maintain and operate lab automation systems used to process samples.
  • Operate, calibrate and maintain equipment used in analysis such as spectrophotometers, analyzers, microscopes, slide stainers, diluters, and computer controlled high volume analyzers, mixers, rotators, pipettes.
  • Perform minor troubleshooting on equipment used to perform testing or store supplies.
  • Maintain equipment used for personal protection and safety such as eyewashes, safety showers, biohazard containers, hoods, chemical cabinets and personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain temperature dependent equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, incubators, water baths, heat blocks.
  • Daily quality control review and assists the supervisor with monthly QC review investigations.
  • Organize and clean workspaces.
  • Ensure adequate supplies required for daily operations are available by restocking inventory, preparing reagents, rotating stock as required.
  • Evaluate use of supplies to identify possible areas of cost savings.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting or maintenance procedures as needed.
  • Train others in troubleshooting.
  • Act as a resource for bench staff.
  • Assist in training and supervision of students as coordinated by the education coordinator.
  • Act as preceptor for new hires in the onboarding and training process.
  • Assess competency in areas of experience.
  • Set up, monitor and help troubleshoot IT issues related to testing platforms and middleware used in the Core Lab.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned.
