The Medical Laboratory Scientist II performs test procedures of moderate/high complexity, requiring independent judgment and responsibility in qualified specialties. This role demands proficiency in all testing areas and troubleshooting instruments/procedures. Responsibilities include supporting the department in quality control, resolving complex problems, providing customer support, maintaining instruments and equipment, training staff, improving processes, and completing special projects. The scientist will perform and report analytical tests according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring quality control and compliance with laboratory policies for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance. Adherence to analytical schedules to meet turnaround times, including STATs, is crucial. The position involves ensuring reagents/test kits are properly dated, performing and documenting QC analysis, making quality control decisions, and informing supervisory personnel of any problems or deviations. Test results are entered into the Laboratory Information System for physician review. The scientist is responsible for maintaining a safe, functional, and sanitary laboratory environment, completing training and competency checklists, and may assist with training other personnel. Compliance with CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety requirements is mandatory, including the use of personal protective equipment and engineering/work practice controls. The role may involve answering client questions, participating in regulatory inspections, and potentially assuming lead responsibilities when delegated in a supervisor's absence.
