About The Position

This person will work under the supervision and direction of the Flow Cytometry supervisor. Duties include processing, staining and analyzing routine specimens. They will be expected to keep all instrumentation in good working order and identify and notify the supervisor of instrument malfunctions. They should be able to aid in instrument repair. They should be able to identify abnormal or discrepancy results. They will have limited participation in student teaching and assisting of other personnel rotating through the section. They will have limited administrative duties.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Sciences OR an approved ASCP discipline (30 semester hours in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the Bachelor's) with 2 yrs of experience.
  • ASCP or another accrediting agency certified or eligible (Certification must be obtained within one year of employment).

  • 3 or more years of flow cytometry experience

Responsibilities

  • Analyze blood, bone marrow, body fluids, and tissues to screen for abnormal cell populations.
  • Data entry of test results into LIS and appropriate information systems.
  • Provide technical information e.g., specimen requirements and collection, test methods etc., to RN, physicians, and other clients.
  • Discuss flow cytometry results with pathologists.
  • Vendor software maintenance and electronic file maintenance.
  • Use of multiple computer systems for method validations and verifications, document control, online continuing education, and training.
  • Set up, maintain, and operate flow cytometers plus smaller equipment e.g., centrifuges, microscopes.
  • Perform minor troubleshooting and be able to call the vendor for service if needed.
  • Perform QC and perform corrective action as needed.
  • Be a resource for quality control issues.
  • Maintain temperature-dependent equipment such as refrigerators and freezers.
  • Maintain equipment used for personal protection and safety, such as eyewashes, safety showers, biohazard containers, hoods, and personal protective equipment.
  • Be a resource for bench staff.
  • Assist in the training and supervision of students as coordinated by the education coordinator.
  • Resident and fellow training as directed by the department medical director.
  • Act as a preceptor for new hires in the onboarding and training process.
  • Assess competency in areas of experience.
  • Maintain current knowledge of hospital policy, state, federal, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain certifications, continuing education, annual education, and/or training as required for the position.
  • Perform proficiency testing required for accreditation.
  • Antibody QC, Reagent preparation Batch, antibody preparation, and QC.
  • Other duties as assigned.
