About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) at The Outer Banks Hospital is responsible for performing clinical laboratory tests in accordance with established policies and procedures. This role is crucial for ensuring the accuracy and quality of laboratory results, which directly impacts patient care. The MLS will prepare specimens, monitor test results, communicate findings, and maintain laboratory equipment, all while adhering to safety and quality standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or a biological, chemical, or physical science from an accredited institution.
• Bachelor's degree with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry, obtained within or in addition to the degree is also acceptable.
• For non-CLS/MT degrees, one year of experience in a clinical laboratory is required.

Nice To Haves

• Certification as MLS, BB, C, H or MB by ASCP or other nationally recognized certifying agency.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patient specimens as required for laboratory testing and perform laboratory tests specific to department.
• Monitor test results to assure test quality and validity.
• Communicate test results in a timely manner.
• Enter and retrieve data from laboratory computer systems.
• Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and environment.
• Demonstrate appropriate, caring behavior in the workplace, treating patients, their families, visitors and staff with respect and dignity.
• Work alternate shifts as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, phlebotomy.
