Job Summary Medical Lab Scientist Molecular Lab Day Shift The Medical Laboratory Scientist I (MLS I), in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non-waived testing. Each individual performs only those tests that are authorized by the Laboratory Director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual’s education, training or experience, and technical abilities. Under general supervision, after successful completion of orientation, training, and competency assessment on all instruments/methods applicable to their role, the Medical Laboratory Scientist I (MLS I) carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the laboratory's standard operating procedures. Works independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret accurately test results used by providers in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Reports to: Manager and Clinical Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Clinical Laboratory Sciences required or Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology required or Bachelor's Degree Laboratory Sciences required
  • Medical Technologist (ASCP) - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) preferred
  • lab experience 1-2 years required
  • Must have basic understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance and repair and analytic techniques.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols, including communication with supervisors when issues are identified.
  • Must be able to perform as a team member.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff including physicians, hospital personnel, employees, and patients.

Responsibilities

  • Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results.
  • Performs qualitative and quantitative tests and procedures using instruments and/or manual methods according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Operates all instruments/analyzers according to laboratory policies and procedures. Performs routine maintenance, function checks or calibrations on equipment according to policies and documents. Recognizes instrument malfunctions, documents problems as may be required, performs troubleshooting and repair according to established guidelines.
  • Performs quality control for all reagents and instruments according to policies and documents results. Takes action for all out of range QC results and documents corrective action steps if applicable.
  • Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation, and reporting of test results according to laboratory policies. Identifies aberrant patient test results and takes appropriate action; seeks assistance in resolution as needed. Documents all corrective action steps.
  • Participates in QA/QI activities as required. Participates in Proficiency Testing program including the handling and analysis of Proficiency Testing samples. Documents errors using hospital Safety Reporting System; informs supervisor/manager when safety reports are entered.
  • Plans, organizes, and prioritizes work duties to accomplish daily tasks and objectives. Supports and assists coworkers as needed to ensure the best possible patient care; able to work independently while functioning as a team member.
  • Performs other duties as required that may include inventory management, processing samples, call back of critical test results, and clerical duties.
