About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist I (MLS I) at Brigham & Women's Hospital is responsible for performing waived and non-waived testing under general supervision. This entry-level position requires a Bachelor of Science degree and ASCP certification. The MLS I will ensure accurate test results and maintain laboratory standards while working independently and efficiently. The role includes specimen processing, test performance, and reporting results, adhering to established laboratory policies and quality control measures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Chemical, Physical, or Biological science from an accredited college or university required.
  • ASCP Certification or proven eligibility required.
  • Entry-level position requiring analysis skills and supervising experience.

Responsibilities

  • Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
  • Follow established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within acceptable performance levels.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results and correct them or notify the appropriate supervisor.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Perform high complexity testing under the onsite, direct supervision of a qualified general supervisor if qualified.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative tests and procedures using instruments and/or manual methods on blood, plasma, and other body fluids according to laboratory policies.
  • Prepare samples and reagents for testing according to laboratory policies.
  • Operate all instruments/analyzers per established procedures or instructions in applicable operator's manual.
  • Perform routine maintenance, function checks, or calibrations on equipment according to policies and document them.
  • Recognize instrument malfunctions, document problems, perform troubleshooting and repair according to established guidelines, and alert supervisor as needed.
  • Perform quality control for all reagents and instruments according to policies and document quality control results.
  • Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation, and reporting of test results according to laboratory policies.
  • Identify aberrant patient test results, recognize factors that affect results, and take appropriate action; seek assistance in resolution as needed.
  • Participate in QA/QI activities as required.
  • Participate in Proficiency Testing program including handling and analysis of Proficiency Testing samples.
  • Complete orientation, training, and competency for all applicable instruments/methods and maintain competency.
  • Keep current in developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in clinical laboratory; participate in continuing education.
  • Document errors using hospital Safety Reporting System and inform supervisor/manager when safety reports are entered.
  • Adhere to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures including laboratory procedures, hospital procedures, and safety plans.
  • Perform clerical and support services as needed, such as answering the telephone and monitoring pending logs.
  • Monitor reagent and supplies, order as needed, or communicate need to maintain adequate inventory of necessary supplies.
