The Medical Laboratory Scientist I in the Cytogenetics Laboratory will be responsible for performing a broad range of testing in Cytogenetics Wet Lab and Analysis. This will include, but not limited to, processing and evaluating specimens and requisitions, cell culture and harvesting, chromosome analysis, imaging and karyotyping, and reporting. In addition, the technologist will perform daily, weekly and monthly QC and preventative maintenance in their assigned areas for further review by the supervisor or Medical Director. This requires one to maintain safe work practices, follow all regulatory requirements and procedures and engage supervisor, manager, director and other department staff as appropriate.

  • Performs testing of patient samples, interprets, reviews, and prepares patient test results for review by the Supervisor and/or Medical Director.
  • Interacts with staff from various departments to coordinate the proper acquisition, testing, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Maintains all aspects of quality control and quality assurance, assesses for acceptability, and takes corrective action as required.
  • Serves as a resource to assist other technologists in the Laboratory.
  • Leads training for new employees, students, and residents, and performs employee competencies as assigned.
  • Completes validation and verification of new instrumentation and testing.
  • Ensures the accuracy of instrument calibration and that preventative maintenance is performed.
  • Assists the Medical Director and supervisor with analyzing and implementing new tests.
  • Performs additional studies as required for quality assurance initiatives, research support, or verification/validation of new equipment or methods.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Sciences OR an approved ASCP discipline (30 semester hours in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the Bachelor's).
  • ASCP or another accrediting agency certified or eligible (Certification must be obtained within one year of employment).
  • BSMT or BSMLS degree in Cytogenetics
  • Previous clinical laboratory experience.
  • Previous Cytogenetics experience
  • ASCP Certification in Cytogenetics CG(ASCP)
  • General knowledge of clinical laboratory quality control practices.
