About The Position

UPMC is seeking Medical Laboratory Scientists and Medical Lab Technicians to join their team in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. These roles are generalist positions that involve supporting and rotating through all areas of the laboratory. The successful candidates will perform routine and STAT laboratory analytical methods essential for patient diagnosis and treatment, while working in a collaborative environment that emphasizes innovation, respect, and teamwork.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university and completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Lab Scientist program, or equivalent qualifications.
  • Associate's degree in laboratory science with certification from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum 1-year experience in a hospital laboratory preferred for both roles.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred; New York License required for NY locations.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred; New York license required for NY locations.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory for Medical Laboratory Scientist role.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with all laboratory customers professionally and respond to inquiries courteously and in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, methods, quality assurance, and proficiency testing.
  • Follow procedures for specimen collection and processing, including phlebotomy as required.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures with precision and accuracy.
  • Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow up according to established protocols.
  • Process specimens for analysis and enter accurate patient information into the laboratory information system.
  • Independently perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests and perform High Complexity testing under supervision.
  • Document Quality Control according to established protocols and inform supervisory personnel of any unusual incidents.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, performing quality control checks and preventive maintenance.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for laboratory functions and use materials cost-effectively.
  • Demonstrate dependability and independent judgment while accommodating department needs.
  • Follow biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety guidelines to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Honor confidentiality of patient information and follow compliance guidelines.
  • Assist with training and orienting new employees, students, and residents.
