The Medical Laboratory Technician ASCP performs laboratory procedures in a timely and accurate manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. This position carries out functional duties in the Pre-Analytic, Analytic, and Post-Analytic phases of the laboratory workflow. The technician may be required to share responsibility for delegating work assignments for self and coworkers in the absence of a supervisor or lead. Compliance with CLIA standards is required, specifically responsibilities under 42CFR493.1495 for high complexity testing and 42CFR493.1425 for moderate complexity testing personnel. Essential Responsibilities Performs only those moderate and high complexity tests authorized by the Laboratory Medical Director and requiring skills commensurate with education, training, experience, and technical abilities. Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results. Maintains records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. Adheres to quality control policies and documents all quality control activities, instrument calibrations, procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed. Follows established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within acceptable performance levels. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results and either corrects the problems or immediately notifies the supervisor or Laboratory Medical Director. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications. Produces consistently accurate work that demonstrates attention to detail and reflects positively on the organization. Encourages high standards of quality in others. Speaks clearly and credibly, listens attentively, and allows others to make their point.
