About The Position

Baptist Health Walker Hospital is a 267-bed facility located in Jasper, recognized by The Joint Commission and committed to serving the diverse needs of our growing community. The hospital offers a range of comprehensive and compassionate services including bariatrics, behavioral health, cardiac care, emergency room care, gynecology, neurology, obstetrics, orthopedics, physical therapy, advanced stroke treatment, surgical care, and urology. The Medical Laboratory Technician plays a vital role in the patient care journey by diagnosing illness, monitoring treatment, and ensuring providers have accurate data. The position requires detail orientation and a passion for science. The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Sr. evaluates, analyzes, and performs automated and complex laboratory procedures, monitors workflow, and ensures regulatory compliance in the assigned area of responsibility. The schedule for this position is night shift, working three twelve-hour shifts from 3:30 PM to 4:00 AM.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.
  • Current Alabama license as a Medical Technologist certified in the specialty/specialties required by the laboratory section assigned.
  • Supervisor License preferred.
  • National Certification such as ASCP, AAB, or AMT preferred.
  • Three (3) years MLS experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains active participation in the corporate technical committee for assigned area.
  • Assists with policy development and revisions including quality control and maintenance.
  • Evaluates and selects instruments and assesses their impact on laboratory operations.
  • Defines competency requirements and creates student education plans.
  • Inputs into quality management plans and process improvement plans.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance and maintains test menus based on organizational needs.
  • Resolves problems and identifies appropriate solutions to meet lab objectives.
  • Monitors and participates in daily departmental operations.
  • Addresses customer concerns and follows up in a timely manner.
  • Serves as a resource to other team members in the department.
  • Performs audits to ensure compliance as needed.
  • Assists with resolving issues in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Makes recommendations for alternative methodology of current procedures.
  • Recommends skill mix based on technical complexity.
  • Supports the supervisor and manager in maintaining the operational budget.
  • Monitors appropriate test utilization.
  • Trains new team members at the request of the Supervisor.
  • Completes competency documentation for team members.
  • Ensures that the Orlando Health Clinical Laboratory is inspection ready.
  • Maintains good communication with all Laboratory team members and customers.
  • Maintains regular, punctual attendance consistent with policies.
  • Participates in identified value improvement task forces and implements improvements.
  • Understands the functions of all laboratory areas and fulfills team leader responsibilities as required.
  • Practices infection control and safety policies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient records and departmental matters.
  • Mentors technologists in their assigned tasks.
