About The Position

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is dedicated to advancing cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through groundbreaking research and exceptional patient care. Our Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is committed to providing the highest quality clinical pharmaceutical care to children, integrating research findings into clinical practice as swiftly as possible. The Medical Lab Scientist II will ensure the prompt and precise execution, validation, and reporting of laboratory tests for medical analysis, manage the technical aspects of a specific lab section including quality control and equipment, coordinate shift workflows, and contribute to research and development under supervision, while maintaining compliance and quality documentation, fulfilling roles as defined by CLIA requirements. The Medical Lab Scientist will ensure the prompt, efficient, and accurate delivery of laboratory test results for medical prognosis and research, manage documentation for quality control and compliance, maintain laboratory equipment and inventory, participate in quality initiatives, and perform assigned CLIA roles to support various lab operations and shifts. This role is Sunday - Thursday 10:30pm-7am with rotating weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology/medical lab science or in one of the biological, chemical, or physical sciences and completion of a medical laboratory technologist training program required.
  • 4+ years of medical laboratory experience required.
  • Experience in lab equipment operations, medical technology techniques, and execution of specialized lab test procedures.
  • Experience in data collection and analysis.
  • Experience working with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Proven performance in earlier role/ comparable role.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS from the ASCP, NRCC, ABB, ASCPi is required within six (6) months of hire if not licensed in Tennessee as a medical laboratory professional. Acceptable licenses are Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Supervisor-General or Categorical Supervisor, Special Analyst or Categorical Technologist in assigned laboratory section.
  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology/medical laboratory science or in one of the biological, chemical or physical sciences and completion of a medical laboratory training program required.
  • Medical Laboratory skills obtained through clinical rotations or training are required
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Technologist from an approved accrediting organization (e.g., ASCP, AMT, NRCC, ABB, ASCPi) is required within six (6) months of hire if not licensed in Tennessee as a medical laboratory professional. Acceptable licenses are Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT)-General, Medical Laboratory Supervisor-General or Categorical Supervisor, Special Analyst or Categorical Technologist in assigned laboratory section.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Clinical Lab Science preferred.
  • Master's degree in Clinical Lab Science with 2+ years of experience.
  • 2 years of relevant clinical medical laboratory technician experience may be considered for 1 year of medical technologist experience.
  • Medical Laboratory work experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and oversee test life-cycle activities and aspects within own area (e.g., execution, validation, and reporting of medical lab results; storage, distribution/shipping of specimens and material; tissue governance).
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to discuss test results and provide necessary support and guidance.
  • Participate in research and development activities, staying updated on advancements in laboratory techniques and technologies/procedures.
  • Perform verification and validation planning for new equipment and assays.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, conduct quality control, troubleshoot issues, and perform routine maintenance.
  • Support ongoing lab inventory planning, monitoring, and management.
  • Oversee compliance with safety and infection control protocols within own area.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of test procedures, results, and quality control data.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Execute prompt, efficient, and accurate performance, validation, and reporting of laboratory test results which are utilized for the purpose of prognosis, diagnosis, treatment and research.
  • Conduct ongoing documentation of all processes as required (e.g., QC, compliance, appropriate usage of material/ equipment/ PPE).
  • Comply with document and record management requirements.
  • Perform quality control activities (e.g., reagent, analyzer), document results and escalate issues as required.
  • Assist in set-up, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting activities for equipment within lab under guidance.
  • Participate in ongoing lab inventory planning, monitoring, and management.
  • Assist in updating assigned sections of the procedure and preventive maintenance manuals to reflect current practices.
  • Collect quality data, as assigned, and assist in Quality Program initiatives as required.
  • Comply with all standards/ requirements of hospital and licensing/ accrediting agencies.
  • Inform supervisor of unusual observations or occurrences in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
