Position Summary The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) II evaluates and interprets laboratory results, analyzing blood and body fluids using both automated and complex manual methods. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • An associate degree and two years of directly related experience may substitute for the bachelor’s degree (in addition to experience requirements below).
  • Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.
  • Must maintain a current Florida license as a Medical Technologist in the specialty/specialties required for the assigned laboratory section(s).
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience required.
  • Department-specific competencies may be required based on assignment.

Nice To Haves

  • National certification preferred, such as: American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) American Medical Technologists (AMT)

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate specimens for quality and pre-analytical errors.
  • Verify results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
  • Perform, evaluate, and document all quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Work under general guidance, typically requiring assistance only with moderately complex procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of other laboratory areas and how they interrelate.
  • Work semi‑autonomously to complete assigned tasks.
  • Verify instrument performance standards, including linearity, reportable range, and method comparisons.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in laboratory computer systems, including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.
  • Ensure proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.
  • Assist with inventory management.
  • Communicate critical results to appropriate caregivers.
  • Evaluate accuracy of results across all phases of testing, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical processes.
  • Report work activities, instrument issues, supply needs, and pending tasks during shift change handoff.
  • Respond to technical inquiries related to laboratory work.
  • Assist with training and onboarding of new team members and students.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies and applicable regulations (ADA, FMLA, etc.).
  • Maintain compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • Perform specimen collection, receiving, and processing as needed.
  • Answer telephones and greet department visitors professionally.
  • Maintain current job knowledge to effectively instruct students or other personnel.
  • Follow established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Practice proper infection control and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Protect patient, hospital, and departmental confidentiality at all times.
