The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) is a laboratory professional who supports other laboratory personnel in various tasks including specimen collection, receiving, processing, laboratory testing, process improvement, and quality initiatives.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong customer service skills

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from nationally recognized agency as a phlebotomist upon hire
  • Certification from a nationally recognized agency as a medical lab assistant within 2 years of hire date
  • Experience working in the clinical setting

Responsibilities

  • Ensure specimens are obtained in accordance with laboratory guidelines
  • Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider
  • Follows proper protocols for specimen packaging and specimen transport
  • Responsible for patient registration, lab test ordering, specimen receipt, accessioning, processing and specimen distribution according to protocol
  • Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport
  • Performs proper drug screen collection and processing, as assigned
  • Monitors phlebotomy draw list and assigns/dispatches phlebotomists to draw specimens as assigned
  • Courier duties as assigned
  • Performs laboratory tests in compliance with policies and procedures as assigned
  • Assists in preparing laboratory equipment for testing
