The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) is a laboratory professional who supports other laboratory personnel in various tasks including specimen collection, receiving, processing, laboratory testing, process improvement, and quality initiatives.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Basic computer skills
- Strong customer service skills
Nice To Haves
- Certification from nationally recognized agency as a phlebotomist upon hire
- Certification from a nationally recognized agency as a medical lab assistant within 2 years of hire date
- Experience working in the clinical setting
Responsibilities
- Ensure specimens are obtained in accordance with laboratory guidelines
- Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider
- Follows proper protocols for specimen packaging and specimen transport
- Responsible for patient registration, lab test ordering, specimen receipt, accessioning, processing and specimen distribution according to protocol
- Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport
- Performs proper drug screen collection and processing, as assigned
- Monitors phlebotomy draw list and assigns/dispatches phlebotomists to draw specimens as assigned
- Courier duties as assigned
- Performs laboratory tests in compliance with policies and procedures as assigned
- Assists in preparing laboratory equipment for testing
