About The Position

The Medical Interpreter serves a crucial role at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, providing essential interpretation services for patients and staff. Under the direction of the manager, the incumbent will facilitate communication between speakers of different languages, ensuring that medical information is accurately relayed in compliance with all office and hospital policies, particularly those concerning patient confidentiality and informed consent. The interpreter will utilize consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes to effectively bridge language barriers in a healthcare setting. In addition to interpreting duties, the Medical Interpreter will assist the department with on-the-job training and mentoring of interpreter interns, contributing to the professional development of future interpreters. This position requires a strong understanding of medical vocabulary and the ability to translate accurately into and from the working languages. The interpreter will also be expected to demonstrate excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with individuals from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. The role is designed for individuals who possess a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a healthcare setting as a medical interpreter, along with fluency in English and one or more foreign languages. Candidates should have completed a minimum of 40 hours of college-level interpreting training and achieved at least an Advanced Mid proficiency level according to ACTFL standards. Strong organizational and time management skills, as well as computer proficiency, are also essential for success in this position.
