About The Position

The Medical Interpreter at Nationwide Children's Hospital plays a crucial role in facilitating communication between healthcare providers and patients with limited English proficiency, specifically in Somali. This position requires bilingual proficiency, completion of medical interpreter training, and a commitment to providing culturally competent care. The interpreter ensures clear and accurate communication, clarifies complex information, and supports patient navigation and care coordination. The role is essential for delivering quality healthcare and requires certification within six months of hire.

Requirements

  • Bilingual in English and Somali.
  • Completion of accredited medical interpreter training (40 hours).
  • Proof of language proficiency.
  • High school diploma or GED required; two years of college experience preferred.
  • Experience interpreting in a health or human service organization required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations from various economic backgrounds and age groups.
  • Effective customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills required.
  • Valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • CCHI Certification preferred, can be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience in a fast-paced healthcare environment with a variety of customer service needs.
  • Formal interpreter training preferred.
  • One-year experience working in a healthcare organization or interpreting in a healthcare or social service organization is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Literally and accurately transmit what has been said from one language into another to support communication between healthcare providers and patients/families.
  • Clarify information that cannot be literally translated to facilitate understanding between healthcare providers and patients/families.
  • Provide a cultural framework for the message being interpreted when necessary to prevent misunderstandings.
  • Clarify the role of the Medical Interpreter to patients/families and healthcare providers.
  • Serve as a resource to healthcare providers regarding culturally competent care.
  • Support patient navigation and care coordination outside of typical interpreter responsibilities.
  • Translate simple written patient-specific healthcare information or care instructions into the patient's language as appropriate.
  • Abide by the Medical Interpreter Code of Ethics and maintain confidentiality of patient/family information.
  • Seek to increase and maintain interpreter skills and knowledge through continuing studies and training.
  • Complete necessary documentation of interpreter services provided.
