  • Transmit spoken communication accurately between healthcare providers and patients/families in both English and Spanish.
  • Clarify information that cannot be literally translated to facilitate understanding.
  • Provide cultural context for messages being interpreted to prevent misunderstandings.
  • Clarify the role of the Medical Interpreter to patients/families and healthcare providers.
  • Serve as a resource for healthcare providers on culturally competent care.
  • Support patient navigation and care coordination beyond typical interpreter duties.
  • Translate simple written healthcare information into the patient's language as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to the Medical Interpreter Code of Ethics.
  • Complete necessary documentation of interpreter services provided.
  • Seek to enhance interpreter skills through ongoing training and education.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Completion of accredited medical interpreter training (40 hours).
  • High school diploma or GED required; two years of college experience preferred.
  • Experience interpreting in a health or human service organization.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Effective customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Experience in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Formal interpreter training preferred.
  • National Certificate in Healthcare Interpreting (CHI or CMI) within 6 months of hire.
