About The Position

Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, provides medical interpretation services to facilitate communication between patients and staff who speak different languages, including spoken and sign languages. Ensures accurate and confidential exchange of medical and other relevant information in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, and patient privacy regulations. May also offer trilingual interpretation support in Spanish or Portuguese and American Sign Language (ASL).

Requirements

  • Fluency in both English and American Sign Language (ASL) required
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, language, or human services field required
  • ASL fluency must be demonstrated by one of the following: Certification from the National Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID), Level 4 or higher from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), Eligibility to sit for a certification exam
  • Formal training or experience in medical interpretation required
  • Must be a 'qualified' medical interpreter with a minimum of 40 hours of interpreter training
  • Certification from the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters required, or must be obtained within 12 months of hire
  • Strong understanding of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds essential
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required
  • Ability to perform well under pressure is necessary
  • Equivalent experience, education, or training may be considered in place of a degree

Nice To Haves

  • Additional fluency in Spanish or Portuguese strongly preferred
