About The Position

This position is in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Southeast Network (VISN 7), VA Augusta Health Care System (VAAHCS) in Augusta, Georgia located in the Nursing, Hospital Service Line. Major duties include, but are not limited to:

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine, standardized cardiac ultrasound examinations.
  • Generates adequate gray scale images to define cardiac borders.
  • Performs Doppler integration of cardiac valves for determination of flow velocities.
  • Interacts with patients explaining procedures and positioning and prepping the patient for procedure.
  • Functions as back up technician for performing 12 Lead EKG's and ambulatory ECG/Event monitor placement as needed.
  • Manages distribution of emergent, urgent, and elective patients in the Echo clinics and will work with supervisors and or service providers to provide an effective utilization of Echo clinics.
  • Manages Echocardiography images in PACs.
  • Adapts transducer positioning, instrument controls and examination techniques to the individual patient being studied.
  • Performs cardiac studies of the four chambers of the heart using scanning techniques to detect incompetent valves, chamber enlargement, pericardial effusion and cardiovascular studies deriving pressure gradients across obstructed valves, etc. Ability to acquire images using 3D echo capability.
  • Follows facility RME policy for cleaning and sterilization process for transesophageal (TEE) probes.
  • Follows manufactures recommendations for the care and management of the TEE probe.
  • Completes diagnostic studies ordered by and in collaboration with physicians on all tours of duty with minimal or no direct supervision; works with coworkers to coordinate appointments/workload according to appropriateness of patients/staffing; prioritizes in/outpatients and requests throughout the day.
  • Evaluates new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations.
  • Collaborates with supervisor to provide ongoing staff development and training related to Echocardiography to include orientation and training to newly hired staff members.
  • Other duties as assigned by department providers/service chief/MIT supervisor.
