About The Position

Requirements

  • Possession of a BA/BS Degree in Biology, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Forensic Science or closely related field; OR
  • Possession of a current valid embalmer's license; OR
  • Diplomat Certification from the American Board of Medico-legal Death Investigators; OR
  • One year of verifiable experience in a medical, nursing, or investigative field.

  • Experience working with deceased persons and their families.
  • Knowledge of forensic science principles and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to death scenes and assist in the removal of bodies.
  • Assist forensic pathologists with examinations, evidence collection, and autopsies.
  • Gather forensic evidence and medical information, maintaining chain of custody.
  • Collect and preserve evidence for forensic analysis, ensuring proper disposal of biohazard waste.
  • Record valuables and property from death scenes and prepare detailed reports of investigations.
  • Enforce and interpret investigative and autopsy policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate field investigations with law enforcement and other agencies.
  • Locate and notify next of kin, representing the department in various contacts.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in the autopsy suite and related areas.
  • Assist in identifying deceased persons and may testify in court as necessary.
