About The Position

The Wheaton College Medical Doctor provides holistic care in a variety of ambulatory medical services, including urgent/acute care, management of chronic individual physical and mental health issues, public health prevention, wellness promotion, international travel health, and health education to all enrolled Wheaton College students. The Physician is responsible to the Director of Student Health Services. This role is 5 hours/week for 9 months/year.

Requirements

  • MD, DO degree from an accredited school of medicine, Internal medicine, or family practice
  • Licensure in good standing and able to apply for licensure in Illinois
  • Board certified in specialty
  • Current Federal and State DEA license
  • Completion of current Continuing Medical Education (CME)
  • Experience in college health or in working with young adults, and at least 5-7 years of patient care experience post residence
  • Demonstrate skills in primary care, travel health, urgent, mental health, and musculoskeletal/orthopedic medicine
  • Possess knowledge of computer software such as EPIC electronic medical record system and word processing

Responsibilities

  • Conducts medical evaluations including medical histories and examinations, diagnoses, prescribes, and treats ambulatory care patients for a wide variety of illnesses and injuries.
  • Orders and interprets clinical laboratory and radiology reports.
  • Refers to specialists and community partners appropriately.
  • Provides health education related to patient visits.
  • Assesses students in the Extended Care/observation when indicated.
  • Provides continuity of care to students by being available for phone consultation from SHS staff.
  • Supervises care given by the nurse practitioner and registered nurses as it relates to the Physician’s patients.
  • Ensures that Wheaton College AED protocol is compliant and review each incident where emergency care and treatment on a person in cardiac arrest is rendered.
  • Signs for all standing orders utilized by the Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners.
  • Completes monthly Quality Assurance (QA) review on the Nurse Practitioners.
  • Acts as the Collaborating Physician for the nurse practitioner as noted in the Illinois Advanced Nurse Practitioner scope of practice.
  • Collaborates and appropriately consults with Residence Life, Dean of Student Wellness, Academic and Disability Services, Counseling Center and Graduate Student Care to provide care to students who need medical management of mental health problems.
  • Allows name and license number to be used to apply for DEA number at the SHS address. Allows same use for ordering and dispensing of medications.
  • Ensures that Wheaton College AED protocol is compliant and review each incident where emergency care and treatment on a person in cardiac arrest is rendered.
  • Remains knowledgeable of best practices in the medical field and university student health centers while staying abreast of the latest trends in the discipline of medicine.
