About The Position

Founded in 1955, Care Ring is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing health services for the uninsured, underinsured or those lacking access to affordable, high quality preventive health care. The organization annually serves more than 7,600 people in Mecklenburg County and is a leader in collaborative efforts to improve community health. Under the supervision of the CEO, the Part-time Medical Director (MD) provides clinical oversight, guidance and mentorship for a non-profit community health organization delivering essential primary care services for people of all ages. This role focuses on collaboration, supervision, quality assurance, and professional development of clinical staff including Nurse Practitioners (NP), Clinical Nurse Supervisor, Clinical Nurse Coordinator, Certified MA’s (CMA), Patient Service Coordinator and MedServe Fellows. The Medical Director will serve as the collaborating physician for all Care Ring Nurse Practitioners and the Nurse Practitioners will report directly to the MD, while the remaining clinical staff will report to the Clinical Nurse Supervisor. This is a 20-25 hour/week position. The Medical Director does not maintain their own patient panel and provides consultative support as needed for higher-complexity or unusual cases. The role may also support medical student education through volunteer-based teaching or supervision opportunities, as available.

Requirements

  • MD or DO, board certified in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or similar. Preferably Family Medicine.
  • Active NC medical license or eligibility.
  • 5-10 years of clinical experience preferred.
  • Experience supervising NP’s or residents strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and commitment to underserved populations.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding patient information.
  • Proficient in Epic EMR/EHR
  • Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and medical education.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure quality of care delivered by clinicians (Nurse Practitioners) via chart reviews and practice evaluations as per Collaborative Practice Agreements.
  • Provide consultative input for complex or atypical cases without carrying an independent panel.
  • Approve and update clinical protocols.
  • Support integration of evidence-based, trauma-informed, and culturally competent care.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding patient information.
  • Serve as supervisor for and maintain Collaborative Practice Agreements with each Nurse Practitioner. In addition to the statutory requirements of the collaborative physician relationship, as supervisor, the Medical Director will:
  • Conduct provider meetings and communicate clinical updates.
  • Conduct monthly 1:1 meetings with the Clinical Nurse Supervisor monthly, or as often as needed.
  • Provide annual performance evaluations incorporating chart reviews.
  • Implement corrective actions when necessary.
  • Support interdisciplinary teamwork across service lines.
  • Support the professional growth and accountability of clinical staff by identifying performance gaps, guiding corrective action steps, and upholding organizational policies and procedures. When required, collaborate with Human Resources to issue appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with Care Ring’s standards.
  • Mentor Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Supervisor, Clinical Nurse Coordinator, MedServe Fellows, Patient Service Coordinator and CMA’s.
  • The Medical Director will ensure that the Nurse Practitioners and the Clinical Nurse Supervisor receive onboarding and orientation, with direct responsibility for their onboarding/orientation, in collaboration with Human Resources and other external partners as needed.
  • Support Volunteer-bases medical student teaching or precepting.
  • Mentor college and medical students participating in internships, fellowships or volunteer programs.
  • Provide a thorough orientation program for new providers that mees the statutory requirements of new collaborative practice agreements and includes but is not limited to a 90-day written review (at minimum) and direct mentorship.
  • Serve as a role model of professional excellence, ethics and community-centered care.
  • Responsible for conducting face-to-face annual performance evaluations (at a minimum) on all Care Ring providers, including specialists. This will include review of charts and other necessary data in order to thoroughly review the providers’ effectiveness at following Care Ring’s standards.
  • Develop, review and refine clinical policies and protocols.
  • Ensure alignment with evidence-based guidelines and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure all medical services meet quality assurance and licensing requirements.
  • Assist the CEO with requested clinical quality or provider performance standards summaries.
  • Provide clinical insight for referral pathways and community resource integration.
  • Participate in selected committees or partnerships within part-time scope.
  • Represent the organization in medical and public health partnerships as needed within part-time scope.
