The Medical Director for the Supportive Care Clinic at UAB Hospital plays a pivotal role in the growth and evolution of Supportive Care services within the UAB Health System. This position is integral to the leadership structure of the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care, and is funded through UAB Hospital. The interim medical director will be responsible for planning, oversight, and operations of the Supportive Care Services program, ensuring that high-quality care is delivered to patients in need of supportive services. The role requires maintaining a clinical practice within the Supportive Care clinic, which may involve in-person visits, telehealth consultations, and home visits as part of a community-based team. The medical director will work collaboratively with other medical doctors (MDs) and advanced practice providers (APPs) to oversee clinic scheduling, address patient access issues, and manage the approval process for clinic closures. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the medical director will support strategic growth and programming of Supportive Care services, which includes working with various providers such as MDs, nurse practitioners (NPs), psychologists, counselors, and interdisciplinary team members like nutritionists and physical therapists. The medical director will also assist in tracking quality metrics and other indicators of success, providing feedback to team members to enhance service delivery. Collaboration is a key aspect of this role, as the medical director will work with the Center for Palliative and Supportive Care Steering team and divisional leadership to recruit a long-term medical director. The position also involves leading monthly interdisciplinary team meetings, collaborating on policies and procedures relevant to supportive care, and attending clinic leadership meetings to review operational data and plan for future growth.
