The Medical Director for Occupational Health provides strategic clinical leadership, oversight, and direction for Southcoast Health’s Occupational Health programs and services. This role ensures the delivery of high‑quality, evidence‑based care that supports associate safety, regulatory compliance, workforce well-being, and organizational performance. The Medical Director partners closely with Human Resources, Infection Prevention, Risk, Safety, and operational leaders to maintain a safe, healthy, and engaged workforce across Southcoast Health. This role also serves as the clinical leader for Occupational Health services delivered to contracted external organizations.

Requirements

  • MD or DO with board certification in Occupational and Environmental Medicine (preferred) or related specialties including Preventive Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Physiatry
  • Eligible for or currently holding a Massachusetts medical license
  • Experience in Occupational Health, preferably within healthcare and multi‑employer clinical service models
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, ADA, Workers’ Compensation, infectious disease control, and medical surveillance
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to collaborate across complex organizations

Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical direction for evaluation, treatment, and follow‑up of work‑related injuries and illnesses for Southcoast Health employees and external organizations served through Occupational Health contracts
  • Oversee medical decision‑making, protocols, and standards of care aligned with evidence-based practice and regulatory requirements
  • Guide workforce immunization programs, communicable disease management, and medical surveillance initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, CDC, ADA, FMLA, Workers’ Compensation, and Massachusetts regulations for Southcoast Health and external client organizations
  • Provide expert consultation on ADA accommodations, work restrictions, and return‑to‑work determinations
  • Partner with HR and Legal on complex fitness‑for‑duty determinations and safety-sensitive roles
  • Collaborate with the Director of Organizational Culture and Engagement to develop, optimize, and continuously improve Occupational Health policies, workflows, and clinical processes
  • Support strategic planning initiatives to reduce injury rates and enhance workplace health and safety
  • Ensure consistent service delivery standards across all sites and contract partners
  • Provide physician oversight for exposure investigations, post‑exposure prophylaxis, and employee testing for internal and external organizations as required
  • Partner with Infection Prevention on outbreak response, emergency preparedness, and exposure prevention initiatives
  • Serve as the designated physician leader and medical advisor for external organizations receiving Occupational Health services
  • Provide clinical oversight for contracted Occupational Health programs, ensuring clinical quality and regulatory compliance
  • Oversee complex clinical cases, medical surveillance results, fitness‑for‑duty evaluations, and return‑to‑work decisions
  • Participate in contract development, scope definition, and service expansion discussions
  • Represent Southcoast Health in external meetings, advisory groups, and executive‑level engagements
  • Ensure consistent clinical protocols and communication standards across multi‑employer contracts
  • Partner with HR, Safety, Legal, and operational leaders to support workforce health goals
  • Collaborate with external client leadership to align Occupational Health programs with workplace safety strategies
  • Serve on internal and external committees representing Occupational Health services
  • Provide coaching and clinical oversight to Occupational Health advanced practice providers, nurses, and staff
  • Support training, continuing education, credentialing, and performance expectations across Occupational Health teams
