About The Position

Under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, the Medical Director is responsible for upholding current BTAA
veterinary health practices to ensure the overall health and well-being of animals in our care, including daily shelter medicine duties, treating animals in foster care, intake, examination of newly arrived pets, daily rounds of animals, surgical assisting, purchasing and inventory control, blood and laboratory exams.

Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of veterinary experience in a hospital or high volume shelter setting required.
• Minimum 1 year supervisory experience required.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Demonstrates optimism, compassion, integrity, respect and stewardship toward people and animals.
• Proficient in MS Office programs and computer knowledge/experience required.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required.
• Some travel may be required.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to current comprehensive health care programs that include but are not limited to the following components: environmental sanitation, record-keeping, disease surveillance, physical examinations, vaccination, parasite control, disease testing, disease treatment, nutrition, outbreak response, and environmental enrichment for animals in the shelter and in foster homes.
• Educate staff and volunteers regarding animal disease spread and control.
• Manage, direct and evaluate assigned staff according to company policies and employment laws and ensure relevant HR procedures are followed; process employee concerns and problems; document performance including disciplinary actions and employee performance evaluations; conduct interviews, hire, and complete new hire onboarding.
• Assist in with intake of animals, ensuring that each animal receives a physical examination upon entry, in which sick and injured animals are diagnosed and treatment is prescribed in a timely manner.
• Assist in all areas of surgery
• Provide emergency medical care as needed, and transfer of animals to outside emergency clinics, if needed.
• Oversee the care of in-patients at the clinic, work with staff to ensure daily follow up and excellent communication.
• Monitor the health of animals in the shelter, through daily rounds (in collaboration with the shelter staff) and provide appropriate treatment when necessary.
• Provide leadership, direction, guidance and training for medical and shelter staff
• In coordination with the Director of Operations and Shelter Veterinarian, determine humane euthanasia decisions for shelter pets.
• Assist in animal euthanasia when needed.
• Work to develop and implement medical programs to enhance our TNR program as well as our lower income community, providing low cost spay and neuter assistance.
• Assist with developing written protocols for the shelter.
• Promote a caring attitude toward all animals and to treat animals humanely and with compassion at all times, regardless of circumstances including those that are sick, injured, feral or aggressive.
• Ensure accurate recordkeeping in the computerized medical records system for medical management and surveillance of disease within the shelter.
• Periodic presentations for staff on medical/shelter related topics
• Treat people (staff, volunteers, and the public) with respect and courtesy, foster a spirit of teamwork and perform duties in a manner that assists BTAA in the achievement of our goals and encourages community support of our work.
• Coordinate with the Director of Operations, scheduling of routine spay and neuters as well as "special surgeries" (enucleations, dentals, mass removals, etc.)
• Educate the public regarding humane issues and animal care
• Ensure that proper protocols are followed, administers vaccines, and maintains accurate and sufficient medical records for all vaccine clinics and shelter pet records.
• Review shelter pet records for accuracy/completeness
• Assist in the design and format of shelter paperwork and computer programs, as relevant
• Attend management meetings as required
• Maintain relationship/communication with other practicing veterinarians in Sandpoint, Ponderay and Bonners Ferry and surrounding areas.
• Provide regular operational updates and recommendations to meet organizational goals, improve staff performance, and fulfill grant reporting.
• Continue education regarding shelter medicine, sterilization protocols, and related topics.
