About The Position

The Medical Coding Specialist is responsible for the maintenance, completion, and analysis of medical records at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). This entry-level position involves classifying medical data from patient records and translating diagnostic and procedural phrases into alpha-numeric codes. The role requires a strong understanding of medical terminology, coding systems, and relevant legal and procedural regulations, performed under the supervision of higher-level professional staff.

Requirements

  • Possession of an Associate's Degree in Medical Record Science, Health Information Technology, or a closely related field.
  • Completion of a certificate program in medical coding.
  • Active status as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) by AHIMA, or possession of CHIM, CCS, or CPC certification at the time of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of Trauma Registry Course and Abbreviated Injury Scale Course within thirty-six months of appointment.
  • ICD-10 refresher course completion every five years with eight trauma-related continuing education credits per year.

Responsibilities

  • Perform coding of patient diagnoses and procedures by assigning applicable code sets such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS to medical records.
  • Ensure coding work is accurate and sequenced according to industry guidelines and regulations.
  • Analyze medical records to identify documentation deficiencies.
  • Communicate with personnel to obtain additional information for final coding.
  • Route requests for medical information to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist in the compilation and preparation of statistical and informational reports.
  • Help locate and identify records and reports as needed.
  • Respond to requests for information from appropriate individuals.
  • Stay current on relevant coding matters and diagnostic procedures.
  • Perform scheduled downloads of trauma information to relevant state and national databases when assigned to Trauma Registry.
  • Assist in mentoring college student interns.
