The Medical Coder at Minnesota Eye Consultants is responsible for establishing and coordinating documentation and coding processes for clinical and surgical outpatient services, as well as routine eye care. This role serves as a resource for providers and team members, ensuring compliance with coding standards and regulations while providing training and support to enhance the efficiency of the revenue cycle team.

  • Review clinical chart documentation to ensure proper coding by the physician team.
  • Assess operative notes for completeness and assign appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes to outpatient surgical procedures.
  • Capture timely and accurate charges, including electronic processing of clinical charges and updating encounter setups.
  • Stay current with changes in coding and billing regulations and company policies.
  • Create and maintain a reference library of coding and reimbursement policies.
  • Conduct provider chart reviews per company compliance policy, including onboarding new physicians and annual reviews.
  • Implement and oversee coding and documentation training programs for various teams.
  • Communicate coding and documentation clarifications to physicians and support teams.
  • Assist Revenue Cycle teams with coding-related needs and manage unbilled reports.
  • Identify opportunities for improved documentation and coordinate training for team development.
  • Associate degree (AA) from a two-year college or technical school preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years medical billing and coding experience.
  • Coding certification required (e.g., Certified Procedural Coder, Certified Coding Specialist).
  • Knowledge of medical and insurance terminology.
  • Experience with Commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, and managed care insurance plans preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and electronic claim filing.
  • Previous Ophthalmology experience is a plus.
