Job Description: TITLE: Medical Assistant DEPARTMENT: Clinical JOB SUMMARY: The Medical Assistant performs a variety of duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or Physician. Daily responsibilities will vary but may include direct patient care such as vital sign assessment, medication reconciliation, answering phone calls, working with physicians, and processing paperwork within the office as directed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Completion of MA program
  • BLS Health Care Provider Card
  • At least one year experience preferred
  • Ability to operate a computer and windows-based software

Responsibilities

  • Rooming patients for MD/NP visits and obtain vital signs, height, weight verify current medications.
  • Assist the RN with patient assessments, including telephone triage.
  • Assist the RN in carrying out physician’s orders such as scheduling and providing basic patient information.
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills with staff and patients.
  • With additional training, demonstrate proficiency in peripheral lab draws.
  • Notifies RN of any changes or issues regarding the patient’s condition or behavior, results of treatments, accidents, incidents, or errors.
  • Assist physicians/patients with procedures and exams.
  • Demonstrate ability to assist with sterile procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of lab draw requirements and specimen requirements and ability to accurately label such items.
  • Maintain a good workflow and keep provider on schedule.
  • Obtain information for the physician including labs, reports, etc. from outside facilities as needed.
  • Assist in scheduling patient visits, treatments and tests as appropriate.
  • Maintain adequate supplies.
  • Follow practice guidelines for infection control and safety in handling and disposing of infectious/hazardous waste materials.
  • Be aware of and follow practice procedures regarding insurance authorizations for chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy treatments in the office.
  • Other duties as required.
