About The Position

POSITION: Medical Assistant DEPARTMENT: Penobscot Valley Primary Care/Specialty Clinic/Penobscot General Surgery JOB FUNCTIONS Interviews patients and obtains demographic and insurance information accurately. Verifies insurance eligibility and collects patient portion amounts, such as co-pays, according to the Collection Policy. Attempts collection from self-pay patients and refers them to the Financial Counselor to determine eligibility for charity care. Maintains a =5% error rate over a 90-day average and completes end-of-day review before ending each shift. Greets and escorts patients to the exam room in a customer-oriented manner; obtains vital signs and weight; records chief complaint or reason for visit; reviews medication list and allergies; updates family, social, past medical, and surgical history; and informs the provider of meaningful use or preventive care needs (e.g., mammogram, eye exam, etc.). Assists the provider during examinations and with immunizations. Provides patient instructions as directed by the provider. Ensures cleanliness of exam rooms after patient visits and adheres to Standard Precautions. Provides telephone support using appropriate telephone technique. Receives and processes messages accurately and promptly; screens urgent calls and keeps the provider informed. Maintains clinic supplies; reorders and stocks as needed. Ensures supplies and medications are stored according to practice standards; checks for expiration dates; transports instruments in biohazard containers for reprocessing. Notifies secretary of diagnostic studies and referrals as requested by the provider; demonstrates scheduling knowledge and assists the secretary when necessary. Maintains clinical patient records and reviews patient records prior to scheduled visits. Participates in prescription renewals for patients. Participates in gathering data for quality measures. Ensures all equipment is in proper working order and included in the Preventative Maintenance Program. Quality Improvement Actively participates in the Hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program, actively supports and implements Department-specific Quality improvement initiatives and projects, recommends process improvement as appropriate, reports any quality issues in service delivery and consistently commits to a focus on quality improvement and organizational excellence.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program. If not nationally certified (AMT, RMA, NCMA or CCMA) then must obtain Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) within 6 months of hire. Computer literacy (Microsoft Office). Excellent communication skills. Professional appearance and demeanor.
