About The Position

The Medical Assistant (Surgical) is a cornerstone of the clinical team, ensuring a seamless and five-star patient experience on the surgical side of the practice. This in-office role is dedicated to upholding the high standards of care and patient satisfaction that the Rios Center is known for. The Medical Assistant will work intimately with Dr. Rios and the surgical team, from the initial consultation to post-operative care, making them a critical link in the patient’s journey. Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Medical Assistant in a fast-paced clinical or surgical setting
  • Proven experience in a surgical or plastic surgery practice with a strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and surgical procedures
  • Excellent scribing and documentation skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in obtaining vital signs, performing basic clinical assessments, and assisting with patient care procedures
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with an innate ability to build rapport and trust with patients
  • A high level of emotional intelligence to handle sensitive patient conversations with empathy and professionalism
  • A proactive, problem-solving mindset with the ability to anticipate needs and take initiative
  • Impeccable organization, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from a recognized body (CMA, RMA, CCMA) is highly preferred
  • Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and medical office software
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a significant asset
  • Prior experience in a plastic or cosmetic surgery setting

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for examinations and surgical procedures, including positioning, draping, and comfort measures
  • Obtain and record accurate vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, respiration) and document findings in the EMR
  • Conduct thorough and detailed medical histories, including allergies, medications, previous surgeries, and relevant health conditions
  • Act as a scribe during patient consultations, accurately documenting Dr. Rios’s diagnoses, treatment recommendations, clinical observations, and all pertinent patient information
  • Provide clear, compassionate, and empathetic pre- and post-operative instructions to patients and their families
  • Address patient questions and concerns with professionalism, empathy, and a comprehensive knowledge base
  • Educate patients on post-operative care, wound care, activity restrictions, and medication management
  • Maintain a comfortable, clean, and welcoming environment for all patients and their families
  • Assist with patient transfers and positioning to ensure safety and comfort
  • Assist with pre-operative preparation, including obtaining and documenting consents, coordinating required blood work, and preparing patients for surgery — including preparation of surgical charts for the day of surgery and coordinating post-op appointments and accommodations
  • Educate patients on pre-operative instructions, expectations, and recovery guidelines as directed by provider
  • Prepare treatment rooms and ensure necessary supplies are available for pre-op visits and post-operative care
  • Sterilize and prepare all surgical instruments and equipment according to strict infection control and safety protocols
  • Perform post-operative wound care, including dressing changes, cleaning, and assessment, and report concerns to the provider
  • Assist with post-operative visits, monitor recovery, and reinforce provider instructions
  • Track and restock clinical supplies used for patient care
  • Manage and maintain accurate, complete, and current patient records within the EMR system
  • Ensure all clinical documentation is thorough, legible, and compliant with medical record standards
  • Strictly adhere to all HIPAA regulations to protect patient privacy and confidentiality
  • Follow all OSHA regulations regarding bloodborne pathogen exposure, personal protective equipment, and workplace safety
  • Assist with various administrative tasks as needed to support the clinical team and practice operations
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient information and practice business matters
  • Communicate effectively with other team members to ensure seamless patient flow and care coordination
