The Medical Assistant performs assigned patient care and observation duties under the direction of a licensed provider, RN, or LPN. This role involves routine and complex clinical duties such as taking vital signs, administering a limited profile of medications, performing simple diagnostic tests, collecting specimens, drawing blood, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms in an outpatient care setting. The Medical Assistant promotes a supportive and healing environment and assists in emergency situations as directed. Administrative duties may include patient check-in/out, responding to patient requests, reinforcing patient and family education, and visitor/telephone reception. The role also involves maintaining patient charts and records, ensuring proper identification, documentation, routing, and confidentiality, as well as maintaining a clean and healthy environment in compliance with Universal Precaution guidelines and safety standards. Ordering, verifying, and storing unit supplies are also part of the responsibilities. All duties are performed in accordance with Emory Healthcare patient and family centered care standards. Participation in research projects impacting patient care areas may also be required.
