About The Position

This position performs routine clerical, administrative, and clinical duties within the scope allowed for TN state law. This position may be assigned to a specific clinic/provider and/or float to various clinics/providers based on business needs and must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with physicians, providers, fellow team members, patients, and the general public in the performance of all job duties. In addition to the duties listed below, the MA may be required to perform other related duties as requested/assigned at a level that meets and/or exceeds HMA expectations. MA must be customer-focused and driven to grow and develop a working culture consistent with HMA’s mission, vision, and values and commitment to high standards of ethical and business conduct and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations and third-party payer requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Medical Assistant training from an accredited program or a minimum of 1-year experience as a Medical Assistant in a Uro/Gyn setting.
  • CPR certification required.
  • Must be able to stand for 8 to 10 hours a day.
  • Requires regular walking, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
  • Must be able to assist patients with transfers from chair to wheelchair, exam tables, and other patient movement.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Uro/Gyn procedures and equipment preferred.
  • Prior experience in a Uro/Gyn practice or related field is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Gathers, via direct care and/or telephone encounters, clinical data and maintains documentation in the clinical record (initials/dates) to ensure accurate tracking of medical treatment (e.g., chief complaint, vital signs, allergies, medications, advanced directive, growth charts, pain score, health history, immunization records, allergy injection records).
  • Notifies physician/provider and/or Registered Nurse immediately of any abnormal data or patient complaints (e.g., breathing difficulties, adverse drug reactions).
  • Preps charts for physician(s) as instructed and assists with patient education/instructions, lab tests, reports, etc.
  • Assists physicians/providers with gynecological and urological exams, including but not limited to pelvic exams, pap smears, urine tests, bladder scans, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Prepares patients for gynecological and urological procedures by ensuring appropriate draping and providing patient education to reduce anxiety.
  • Performs Bladder Scans and assists with Cystometries, Urodynamics, and other Uro/Gyn diagnostic tests and procedures as ordered by the physician.
  • Collects and processes urine samples and ensures specimens are appropriately labeled and sent to the lab for analysis (e.g., urinalysis, culture).
  • Assists with colposcopy procedures, prepares instruments, provides patient education, and ensures patient comfort during the procedure.
  • Assists in patient care before, during, and after vaginal/urinary surgeries, providing wound care, dressing changes, and post-operative instructions.
  • Provides education on birth control options, urinary incontinence management, and other urological/gynecological health topics as directed by the physician.
  • Administers injections, including hormonal therapy and other Uro/Gyn-specific injections.
  • Maintains and stocks Uro/Gyn-specific equipment (e.g., speculums, pessaries, pelvic exam kits) and ensures proper sterilization techniques are followed.
  • Administers medications and treatments (e.g., immunizations, allergy shots, injections, and hormone treatments).
  • Conducts CLIA-waived testing (e.g., pregnancy tests, urinalysis, pap smears, etc.) and documents results in patient’s chart.
  • Accurately tracks and manages the supply of medication and equipment required for Uro/Gyn-specific treatments and procedures.
  • Triages patients and directs them to the appropriate healthcare provider (physician/provider, RN, etc.).
  • Follows-up on lab tests and abnormal results, communicating with patients in a timely manner.
  • Assists with the patient intake process (including recording vitals, chief complaints, medical histories).
  • Ensures sterile instrument processing is completed timely in accordance with established protocol and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Accurately schedules patient appointments, including for Uro/Gyn exams, diagnostic tests, and procedures (e.g., colposcopy, cystoscopy).
  • Completes patient referrals, authorizations, and follow-up on procedures/tests related to Uro/Gyn care.
  • Displays sensitivity, courtesy, and respect when dealing with patients, team members, and the general public.
  • Exhibits behavior consistent with HMA’s mission, vision, and values.
