Under physician direction and supervision, the Medical Assistant prepares patients for office visits, takes vital signs, records information in the medical record, obtains patient chief complaint, escorts patients to exam rooms, and prepares them for physician visits. The role ensures patients are ready in exam rooms for physician/mid-level provider arrival and reviews patient medical records to confirm all necessary test results, forms, and reports are available. The Medical Assistant assists physicians/providers with procedures and processes specimens according to established procedures. They perform in-office testing as directed by the physician/provider, including EKG's, vision testing, strep tests, urinalysis, suture removals, injections, and immunizations. The position also involves assisting physicians with the completion of patient forms requested by third parties, arranging patient hospital admissions and test scheduling, and ensuring clinical and drug sample areas are maintained according to Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies. Maintaining exam rooms to ensure supplies are present, equipment is in working order, and the area is clean is also a key responsibility. The role may also require assisting with patient phone triage. Essential functions include obtaining patient medical records, ensuring necessary reports and test results are available, escorting patients, documenting vital signs and chief complaints, assisting with gowning, and aiding in examinations or procedures. The Medical Assistant processes specimens, performs various in-office tests, and maintains exam room safety and cleanliness. They assist with patient forms, copying records for release of information, prescription refill calls, patient call backs, and managed care referral processes. Scheduling appointments, arranging inpatient admissions, and ensuring the clinical work environment meets regulatory requirements are also part of the role. Additional duties include assisting with medical record audits, documenting patient phone calls, updating problem and medication lists, tracking preventive medicine, and maintaining patient logs. Credentialed Medical Assistants may assist with medication, laboratory, and radiology order entry into the EHR. Maintaining patient confidentiality, evaluating safety and efficiency factors, handling incoming telephone calls according to customer service standards, and fostering cooperative relationships are also expected. The Medical Assistant is responsible for safe work practices, knowledge of age-specific patient needs, and interacting with diverse patients respectfully. Attendance at staff meetings and potential travel to other SJMHS sites are also required.
