About The Position

Under the supervision of the Practice Manager and guided by Ambulatory Services policies and procedures, the Medical Assistant supports the delivery of high-quality patient care within the Neurology practice. This role assists with both clinical and administrative responsibilities, ensuring efficient patient flow and a positive patient experience. The Medical Assistant works collaboratively with providers and staff, maintains professional standards, and serves as a liaison between patients, providers, and external partners.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 6 months - 1 year of recent experience in a busy healthcare environment
  • Experience with insurance verification and authorizations.
  • Completion of an approved Medical Assistant program or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Current AHA CPR/BLS certification

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Support
  • Prepare and maintain exam rooms according to Medical Center standards
  • Obtain and document vital signs, height, weight, pain screening, and chief complaints
  • Assist providers and nursing staff with patient exams and procedures
  • Perform point-of-care testing and specimen collection as directed
  • Document care and activities accurately in the electronic health record (APEX)
  • Support patient education in collaboration with providers
  • Act as a patient chaperone when needed
  • Facilitate referrals, insurance authorizations, medication refills, and treatment approvals
  • Monitor clinic flow and support multiple providers
  • Adhere to infection control, safety, and regulatory requirements
  • Communication & Patient Experience
  • Maintain professional, courteous telephone and in-person communication
  • Communicate delays and clinic updates to patients and care teams
  • Share relevant information with providers and staff to support care coordination
  • Assist patients with questions or concerns using effective conflict-management skills
  • Uphold UCSF service excellence and customer service standards
  • Administrative & Operations Support
  • Register patients and maintain accurate demographic, insurance, and billing information
  • Verify insurance eligibility and collect co-payments when applicable
  • Schedule new and follow-up appointments using APEX
  • Manage phone calls, messages, and in-basket coverage
  • Coordinate complex procedures and diagnostic testing
  • Maintain supplies, equipment, and clinic workspaces
  • Assist with filing, scanning, and documentation as needed
