About The Position

The Medical Assistant (MA) in the Mayo Clinic Oncology Department plays a vital and dynamic role, encompassing a broad range of responsibilities. This position requires a highly adaptable individual who is cross-trained to perform both front-office and back-office duties, contributing significantly to patient care and clinic operations. This role offers a degree of autonomy, with Medical Assistants working independently at times, alongside a supportive team environment. Please note that this position does not involve assisting with specialized procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Graduate from a Medical Assistant diploma or associate degree program or hold an active Medical Assistant certification (CMA), or registration (RMA) or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification.
  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Computer proficiency required, including prior experience with electronic medical record systems.
  • Ability to work daytime hours, flexibility may be required to meet staffing needs.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Active Medical Assistant certification (CMA), or registration (RMA) or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) is preferred.
  • Experience in an Oncology setting is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phone triage, assessing patient needs and directing calls appropriately.
  • Retrieve and manage patient records, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Assist patients with FMLA paperwork, providing necessary documentation and support.
  • Administer injections as directed by clinical staff.
  • Room patients, prepare them for examinations, and gather initial patient information.
  • Process prescription refills efficiently and accurately.
  • Manage genomic testing requisitions, ensuring all necessary steps are followed.
  • Work independently on assigned tasks while also collaborating effectively as part of the healthcare team.
  • Medical Assistants in the Oncology Clinic are cross-trained.
