The role of the Medical Assistant is to provide both administrative and clinical support to the clinics. The Medical Assistant must be able to work independently as well as interact as part of a team, consistently demonstrating respect and consideration to fellow staff members. Certain duties may vary based upon office location and department structure. This role involves administrative tasks such as answering incoming phone calls, addressing patient requests, scheduling appointments, contacting patient no-shows, distributing patient records, preparing new patient charts, ensuring medical information accuracy, processing outgoing patient referrals, checking out and discharging patients, collecting copayments, and ensuring supplies are stocked and the work area is maintained. Clinically, the Medical Assistant prepares examination rooms, greets and escorts patients, prepares patients for appointments, ensures medications are charted, verifies patient history, obtains vital signs, and assists physicians with office procedures. The Medical Assistant also collaborates with RNs and LPNs to provide high-quality patient care and maintains working knowledge of OSHA compliance standards, completing all required training and in-services.
