About The Position

The Medical Assistant for Foley Adult Outpatient assists with patient assessment, including vital signs and medication lists, and administers injections following medication administration rights. This role requires effective communication with physicians and the care team regarding patient conditions, active participation in a multi-disciplinary team, and reporting laboratory results. Key responsibilities include responding to patient phone calls, processing prescription refills and prior authorizations, and updating medical records. The Medical Assistant also collects and prepares laboratory specimens, instructs patients on medication and diets, and provides emergency care as needed, including crisis de-escalation. The position demands adherence to AltaPointe productivity standards, professional ethics, and policies, including maintaining current licensure and attending required training. It also involves clinical record keeping, ensuring timely, clear, and accurate documentation, and demonstrating courteous and respectful attitudes towards patients, visitors, and coworkers, while maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality.

Requirements

  • Possesses current certification for a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant or equivalent.
  • General knowledge of nursing care (to be attained within 6 months of employment).
  • General knowledge of psychiatric disorders (to be attained within 6 months of employment).
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, especially those terms associated with psychiatric care (to be attained within 6 months of employment).
  • Familiarity of psychopharmacology (to be attained within 6 months of employment).
  • Demonstration of safe medication administration practices including injections (to be attained within 6 months of employment).
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention (to be attained within 6 months of employment).
  • Knowledge of utilizing electronic health record systems (to be attained within 6 months of employment).
  • Knowledge of cultural diversity (to be attained within 6 months of employment).
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed Care Principles (to be attained within 6 months of employment).

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the completion of the assessment process of patients including but not limited to the following: Height/weight, vital signs, and current medication list.
  • Administers injections, observing the seven rights of medication administration.
  • Communicates effectively with the physician and care team regarding the patient's physical and mental condition.
  • Interfaces actively and cooperatively with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Reports laboratory results to the physician.
  • Responds to patient phone calls in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Calls in prescription refills as directed by authorized prescribers.
  • Facilitate PAs for prescriptions.
  • Updates patient medical records as needed.
  • Collects and prepares laboratory specimens, including venipuncture and point of care testing.
  • Assists in instructing patients about medication and special diets.
  • Provides emergency care as needed (CPR, MindSet, etc.), according to the AltaPointe Policy & Procedures.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize the elements of a crisis state and knows how to deescalate or resolve the situation.
  • Meets AltaPointe productivity standards.
  • Effectively demonstrates the application of MA competencies.
  • When necessary, provides coverage at other Baldwin County outpatient programs.
  • Adheres to professional code of ethics.
  • Seeks clinical supervision and consultation needs.
  • Accepts and employs suggestions for improvement.
  • Actively works to enhance clinical skills.
  • Documents in a timely fashion per AltaPointe policy.
  • Documents in a clear, concise manner regarding all patient care provided.
  • Completes all required forms, logs, notes and other applicable documentation promptly and accurately.
  • Writes legibly on handwritten documents.
  • Meets AltaPointe productivity standards.
  • Treats patients with care, dignity, and compassion.
  • Respects patient’s privacy and confidentiality through knowledge of and strict abidance to HIPAA standards.
  • Is pleasant and cooperative with others.
  • Assists patients and visitors as needed.

  • Maintains current State license and requirements for renewals (i.e., CEUs).
  • Attends required in-services and workshops.
  • Other duties as assigned.
