About The Position

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs clinic support in both the clinical and administrative areas: In the clinical area the practice assistant, under the direction and supervision of a licensed Nurse or Provider, and in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice participates in the delivery of patient care. In the administrative area the practice assistant gathers patient information for registration, schedules appointments, verifies demographic and financial information and assists in the facilitation of patient flow throughout the ambulatory setting. Requirements

  • EDUCATION: HS diploma/GED with at least 2 years of previous work experience plus at least one of the following: Successful completion of a medical assistant program or Successful completion of the-second medical-surgical clinical rotation
  • CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: Certificate of Medical assistant program
  • EXPERIENCE: At least 1 year of clinical experience preferred
  • KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge of clinical procedures, patient care protocols, and use of medical equipment necessary to perform delegated clinical tasks safely and accurately.
  • Skill in performing accurate measurements and basic calculations, including vital signs, height, weight, intake/output, and point-of-care testing.
  • Ability to effectively document clinical information in electronic health records using proper medical terminology and hospital-approved abbreviations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with patients, families, and the healthcare team regarding clinical information, instructions, and procedures.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced clinical environment to ensure timely patient care and workflow efficiency.
  • Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to patient emergencies or abnormal findings according to established protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Patient Care Support: Delivers care in a non-judgmental, patient-centered manner under the direction of licensed nurses or providers. Performs delegated clinical interventions including vital signs, intake assessments, specimen collection, point-of-care testing, wound care, and basic procedure assistance, using established protocols, equipment, and electronic health records (EHR) for documentation.
  • Visit Preparation and Coordination: Reviews patient charts prior to visits to identify care needs, ensures necessary equipment and supplies are ready, and prepares patients for provider exams or procedures. Monitors patient flow, communicates wait times, and alerts providers to patient readiness and abnormal findings.
  • Clinical Procedure Assistance: Assists licensed staff with routine and specialty procedures such as biopsies, minor surgeries, endometrial/IUD procedures, chronic wound care, and other advanced clinical interventions. Sets up, maintains, and cleans procedure trays and specialized equipment per clinic protocols.
  • Preventive Care and Health Management: Implements population health outreach using registries and databases to remind patients of screenings, preventive care needs, and follow-up requirements. Documents screenings and preventative care interventions in patient records accurately and timely.
  • Administrative and Clerical Support: Performs registration, scheduling, insurance verification, billing, and co-payment collection. Maintains accurate patient records, updates medication and allergy information, and tracks patient equipment and supplies. Uses EHR and other clinical systems to document, communicate, and support patient care.
  • Inventory and Equipment Management: Maintains, restocks, and ensures proper functioning of clinical and specialized patient equipment. Coordinates repairs or replacements as needed, manages supply orders, and monitors equipment logs.
  • Safety, Compliance, and Communication: Follows infection control, isolation, and safety protocols. Recognizes emergency situations and escalates to appropriate licensed staff. Communicates clearly with the interdisciplinary team to ensure quality patient care and compliance with hospital policies.
