About The Position

Medical Assistant I Job Summary: The Medical Assistant (MA) functions under the medical direction of the clinic physicians and their designees (nurse practitioner, physician assistant, certified nurse midwife) to carry out direct patient care services in the NIHD clinics. Medical Assistant II Job Summary: The Medical Assistant (MA) functions under the medical direction of the clinic physicians and their designees (nurse practitioner, physician assistant, certified nurse midwife) to carry out direct patient care services in the NIHD clinics.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year experience in the medical field or current enrollment in Medical Assistant course
  • High school diploma or GED certificate
  • Medical Assistant training course completion
  • High School Diploma or GED certificate
  • BLS upon hire
  • Knowledge of: The Mission, Vision, and Values of Northern Inyo Healthcare District;
  • NIHD policies and procedures, including Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and Confidentiality standards;
  • NIHD safety policies and procedures, including the Rainbow Chart, Employee Health, and Infection Prevention standards;
  • Point-of-care lab testing
  • Specialty programs unique to clinics, as applicable to each clinic location (including Family PACT, Every Woman Counts, Vaccines for Children, Medication-Assisted Treatment program)
  • Administrative MA duties
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with NIHD staff and the public;
  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships with NIHD staff at all levels as well as the public;
  • Develop and maintain a high degree of maturity, integrity, and good judgement.
  • Obtain and document patient medical histories, vital signs, test results, and other information in the medical record
  • Prepare for clinical exams and assist with setting up for medical procedures
  • Medical terminology, use of electronic health record
  • Medication administration
  • Must exhibit good communication and people skills, good judgment and decision making skills, positive attitude, flexibility, and good problem solving skills, good verbal enunciation, basic understanding of computers, conduct, appearance and work performance shall be of professional quality

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in clinical back office setting
  • 1 + year experience in medical field or clinical back office setting
  • California Certified Medical Assistant certification or similar National certification
  • California Certified Medical Assistant certification or similar National certification

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and documents patient medical histories, vital signs, test results, and other information for the medical record
  • Prepares exam rooms for clinical examinations and assists with setting up for medical procedures and other patient care.
  • Delivers compassionate support, attention, and assistance to patients and caregivers.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks and is flexible in responding to changing needs.
  • Utilizes point-of-care lab tests and documents completely per standard as required by accreditation and regulatory authorities.
  • Participates in quality assurance for point-of-care program.
  • Completes annual point-of-care test competencies
  • Maintains confidentiality and protects patient protected health information
  • Assures that release of information is handled per NIHD policy.
  • Assures that patients are provided privacy for examinations and discussions of health concerns
  • Facilitates the patient stay throughout their time in the back office area: keeps the patient informed of expected wait times or delays in service.
  • Discharges the patient smoothly from the back office.
  • Reviews with the patient written discharge instructions after double identification of the patient.
  • Answers questions or concerns of the patient with input as necessary from the provider.
  • Schedules follow-up visits as appropriate
  • Treats all patients in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner
  • Consistently explains procedures, treatments and care to the patients and families in an understandable manner. Utilizes resources people appropriately.

  • Medication-Assisted Treatment program (MAT)
  • Performs administrative Medical Assistant duties as required
  • Assures responsibility for insuring continued professional growth of self by attending formal/informal education/activities.
  • Attends mandatory department in-services and meetings
  • Maintains BLS / AED certification via the American Heart Association.
  • Completes self-review annually
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • May be asked to assist in facilitating the following specialty programs (as applicable to clinic location)
  • Other NIHD Clinic programs as required
  • Administers medications according to provider order, verifies five rights prior to administration (right patient, right drug, right dose, right route, right time)
  • May assist in ordering supplies and organizing back office areas, including lab and medication room
  • May provide support to newly hired Medical Assistants
  • Will float to other clinics as needed
