About The Position

This full-time Medical Assistant position is located at Atrium Health One Health Mocksville Family Medicine. The role involves providing comprehensive patient care within the Medical Assistant scope of practice, adhering to all policies and procedures, and maintaining training and competency specific to the area of specialty. Key responsibilities include performing rooming and visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, and health screenings, assisting providers with procedures, and conducting various lab-related duties including venipuncture and specimen collection. The Medical Assistant will also be responsible for Point of Care testing, completing CLIA-approved waived laboratory tests, and safely administering medications and vaccines. Additional duties encompass administrative tasks like medication refills, insurance authorizations, appointment scheduling, and maintaining a clean and stocked work environment. The role requires demonstrating knowledge and skills appropriate for patients across the lifespan, assessing patient status, and interpreting age-specific needs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or may have completed structured military training which is clinical in nature per DD214 in lieu of a formal medical assistant program or EMT, or 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years (depending on division).
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required (or obtained within 45 days for IL/WI Divisions, Floyd & Navicent).
  • Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment (for Greater Charlotte and Wake Forest).
  • Recognized or certified as a CMA or RMA by one of the following National Organizations: American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), National Health Career Association (NHA), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), Clinical Medical Assistant Certification (CMAC), or American Medical Certification Association (AMCA).
  • Two years of experience in a clinical practice setting as a Medical Assistant.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills, within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, team members and physicians.
  • Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
  • Demonstrates customer service skills that support a positive patient experience.
  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within 1 year in select areas (for Wake Forest).

  • Demonstrates professional practice advancement through professional governance, safety coach, super-user, vaccine coordinator, SPICE or OSHA/IP certificate holder for unit (for Wake Forest).

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice, follows all policies and procedures, and maintains training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care.
  • Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings (depression, suicide, falls, social drivers of health, etc.).
  • Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
  • Performs Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order.
  • Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
  • Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
  • Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order, and areas are appropriately stocked.
  • May assist with training and onboarding of other teammates.
  • May serve as a role champion or on a committee.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
