About The Position

This is a Full-time Medical Assistant position at Atrium Health University City - Pain Management. The role involves adhering to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, performing patient care tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, and various screenings. The Medical Assistant will assist providers with procedures, perform lab-related duties including venipuncture and specimen collection, conduct Point of Care testing, and administer medications and vaccines. Additional duties include medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, ordering supplies, scheduling appointments, and referrals. The role requires effective communication, teamwork, and maintaining a clean and stocked work environment. The Medical Assistant may also assist with training and onboarding new teammates and serve as a role champion or on a committee. The position requires knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care to patients. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or may have completed structured military training which is clinical in nature per DD214 in lieu of a formal medical assistant program or EMT (for Greater Charlotte and Wake Forest divisions).
  • Completion of an accredited or approved program in Medical Assistant, or 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years (for IL/WI and Floyd & Navicent divisions).
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required (for Greater Charlotte and Wake Forest divisions).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 45 days unless department leader has determined it is not required (for IL/WI and Floyd & Navicent divisions).
  • Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment (for Greater Charlotte and Wake Forest divisions).
  • Recognized or certified as a CMA or RMA by one of the following National Organizations: American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), National Health Career Association (NHA), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA) American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA) (for Greater Charlotte).
  • Certified or registered as a CMA or RMA by one of the following National Organizations: American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification issued by the National Health Career Association (NHA), RMA certification issued by the American Medical Technologists (AMT), Medical Assistant (NCMA) certification issued by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), Clinical Medical Assistant Certification (CMAC), or American Medical Certification Association (AMCA) (for IL/WI and Floyd & Navicent).
  • American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Allied Health (AAH), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Health Career Association (NHA), (MCMA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA) (for Wake Forest).
  • Two years of experience in a clinical practice setting as a Medical Assistant.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills, within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, team members and physicians.
  • Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
  • Demonstrates customer service skills that support a positive patient experience.

  • Successful completion of system approved program to become a primary trainer for new teammates (Greater Charlotte).
  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within 1 year in select areas (Wake Forest).
  • Demonstrates professional practice advancement through professional governance, safety coach, super-user, vaccine coordinator, SPICE or OSHA/IP certificate holder for unit (Wake Forest).

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice, follows all policies and procedures, and maintains training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care.
  • Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings (depression, suicide, falls, social drivers of health, etc.).
  • Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
  • Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order.
  • Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
  • Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
  • Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order, and areas are appropriately stocked.
  • May assist with training and onboarding of other teammates.
  • May serve as a role champion or on a committee.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
