About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Director, SHS Operations, led by the Senior Lead Nurse, and according to established protocol or direction of a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner, the Medical Assistant (MA) performs a variety of skilled Medical Assistant duties and gives direct nursing care to students in the Student Health Center. Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student-centered and equity-minded approach in all communication and service efforts. Requirements

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma required.
  • Possession of a certificate of completion from an accredited and approved medical assisting program through the Department of Education and approved by the Medical Board of California required.
  • Possess and maintain valid CPR/AED certification required.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience performing the duties of a medical assistant in an outpatient clinic preferred.
  • The ideal candidate is a reliable team player with strong oral communication skills who can work well with others in a respectful and professional manner.
  • They should be able to understand basic medical terminology, follow clinic procedures, and stay within the Medical Assistant scope of practice as defined by the Medical Board of California.
  • Attention to detail is key for maintaining accurate medical records, and they must be able to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and SHS policies is essential, along with the ability to use sound judgment and consult with clinicians when needed.
  • The candidate should be comfortable using computers, especially for health information systems, and be able to learn new equipment and procedures quickly.
  • Most importantly, they should be committed to creating cooperative relationships with students, clinicians, and coworkers in a campus-based setting.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for administering medications/immunizations and performing routine care and/or medical assistant duties which require training and skill
  • Assist practitioners in the delivery of health care services such as examinations, clinical procedures, and medical treatments.
  • Ensure health care patient care areas are fully stocked, organized and clean.
  • Administer medications by mouth, intradermal injection, intramuscular injection, subcutaneous injection, including immunizations and tuberculosis testing.
  • Take temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration readings, height and weight and other vital signs.
  • Assist in orienting/training new nursing staff.
  • Make appropriate entries in electronic medical charts (EMR).
  • Prepare patients for examination by a clinician and assist in the examination when appropriate.
