About The Position

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) supports clinical operations by coordinating and scheduling patient appointments with external clinics and specialty providers. This role also serves as a primary point of contact for patients and visitors, assisting with patient intake, rooming, and performing phlebotomy in accordance with clinical standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED/HiSET) required.
  • Ability to obtain Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification within a specified timeframe (e.g., 12 months of hire) if not already certified.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology or willingness to learn.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with patients, families, and staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential or equivalent (RMA, CCMA, etc.).
  • Prior experience in a healthcare or clinical setting.
  • Experience with phlebotomy and patient intake/rooming.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, preferably RPMS or similar platforms.
  • Knowledge of referral coordination and care management processes.
  • Experience working with American Indian/Alaska Native populations or in a tribal health setting.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares for patient visits by reviewing and updating the electronic health record (EHR) prior to appointments, including recent test results, lab findings, and provider correspondence. Identifies care gaps, needed services, and referral status to support continuity of care.
  • Maintains exam rooms in accordance with clinical and infection control protocols. Cleans and sanitizes rooms between patients, ensures adequate stock of supplies, and promptly communicates supply needs to appropriate staff to support timely reordering.
  • Assists providers during patient examinations and procedures in accordance with scope of practice and accepted clinical standards. Adheres to universal precautions and established safety protocols at all times.
  • Supports effective communication between patients and providers, including relaying information, reinforcing instructions, and promoting patient understanding of care plans.
  • Performs assigned clinical and administrative duties as directed by the Supervising RN and Medical Director, including responsibilities that support quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support clinic operations and patient care delivery.
