About The Position

The Clinical Research Management Office of the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine (UMSOM) - Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) is currently recruiting a full-time Medical Assistant. Weekends may be required on an as-needed basis for this position. The Medical Assistant will ensure our clinical trials' integrity and compliance are maintained and conducted following all federal and local regulations, Institutional Review Board approvals (IRB), UMSOM policies, and procedures. Following an extensive training program covering aspects of clinical and research compliance, the Medical Assistant will serve as a primary interface for cancer patients enrolled in research studies at UMGCCC. The Medical Assistant will also interface directly with the research team, principal investigators, treating physicians, and ancillary hospital staff within UMGCCC. The Medical Assistant will also have responsibility for assisting with the maintenance and inventory of specimen kits stored in ancillary space. Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED and successful completion of an accredited program for Medical Assistants.
  • Experience: Previous experience or training in phlebotomy is strongly preferred.
  • Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
  • General knowledge of the principles of aseptic techniques and infection control including blood and body fluid precautions.
  • General knowledge, skill and ability to administer medications, assist with treatments, and operate medical equipment.
  • General knowledge of and ability to meet the requirements for compliance with confidentiality of records and communications regarding clients.
  • Skill and ability to use aseptic and sterile techniques; to interact with the public, health care providers, agencies and facilities.
  • Ability to perform extensive standing and walking; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to operate standard office equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine office testing such as blood pressure, vision, hearing, urinalysis, electrocardiogram, rapid strep screen, dextrostix, and spun hematocrit.
  • Processes samples collected using centrifuge according to research protocol.
  • Stores or ships samples collected according to research protocol.
  • Completes freezer defrosts periodically with accountability of all specimens stored in the freezer to preserve specimen integrity.
  • Transmits collected ECG information according to research protocol.
  • Works as part of a dynamic team to ensure all protocol procedures are completed with no deviations.
  • Prepares and maintains examination and treatment areas including necessary supplies. Sterilizes instruments and equipment. Assembles research kits.
  • Performs clerical duties such as answering phones, greeting and directing clients, scheduling and monitoring appointments, obtaining and processing information.
